Unlike many air conditioning systems of the past which used Freon gas, heat pumps and geothermal heat pumps can provide quality air with a lower impact on the environment. Not only do these products not use fossil fuels to warm the indoor environment in winter, they also provide cooling in warm weather.

In addition to providing both heating and cooling options year-round, heat pumps and geothermal heat pumps are much more energy efficient than traditional air conditioning systems. Using the coefficient of performance ratio as an indicator of efficiency, a heat pump will generally provide 3-4 COP of warmth in cooler temperatures, whereas an electric resistance heater (baseboard heater) will generally only produce 1.0 of warmth. Geothermal units can produce 3.5 to 4.0 in cooler temperatures.

When the warm weather comes, heat pumps and geothermal heat pumps measure their efficiency in EER and SEER. The higher the number you see on the unit you’re considering, the more energy efficient it is. But don’t let the mumbo-jumbo confuse you.
